Description

Who we are
Founded in 2023, Carbon Removal Canada is an independent non-profit accelerating the responsible scale-up of carbon removal technologies by advocating for impactful, research-backed policies, shaping Canada’s carbon removal market, and connecting the right people to the right information. We work with public and private actors to rapidly build the carbon removal industry. Together, we can position Canada as a global leader, unlocking investment for carbon removal, driving economic growth, and meeting our climate targets.

The Role
Carbon Removal Canada is seeking a Senior Manager or Director of Communications to join our public affairs team. The title and compensation will reflect the experience and seniority the successful candidate brings to the role.

This is a senior position for someone who deeply understands communications from an advocacy perspective, not just corporate or internal. This position should seek to influence the public narrative. In the role you can own our communications function, not just execute within it. You will drive the strategy, sharpen the narrative, and build the systems that position Carbon Removal Canada as the authoritative voice on carbon removal policy in Canada. You will work directly with senior leadership and government contacts, lead our external presence across media and digital channels, and help shape how decision-makers understand and act on carbon removal.

This position is remote and can be based anywhere in Canada. The position reports to the Senior Director of Public Affairs.

What you'll do
Below is a list of key responsibilities currently envisioned for this role. We are a fast-paced organization with evolving priorities, so these responsibilities may change.

External Communications

  • Lead the development and execution of communications strategies at the national and provincial levels, translating policy priorities into campaigns that move stakeholders
  • Own our editorial voice across LinkedIn, X, and our website, setting standards for tone, quality, and consistency
  • Write and edit high-quality content including op-eds, blog posts, newsletters, fact sheets, and policy summaries, with limited need for senior oversight
  • Draft and refine press releases, media advisories, and advocacy materials that hold up under scrutiny from government, media, and industry audiences
  • Oversee relationships with graphic designers and external vendors to ensure communications assets are strategic and on-brand
  • Analyze social media and website performance data to continuously improve reach and engagement

Media Relations

  • Lead proactive media outreach and manage incoming inquiries, with the credibility and judgment to represent the organization independently
  • Build and maintain relationships with journalists covering climate, energy, and federal policy
  • Develop and pitch story angles that advance Carbon Removal Canada's policy priorities and profile
  • Manage media tracking, coverage analysis, and reporting to keep leadership and stakeholders informed
  • Prepare spokespeople for media appearances, including developing talking points, briefing materials, and messaging guidance

Internal Communications & Operations

  • Contribute to organizational communications planning alongside the Senior Director of Public Affairs and executive team
  • Support the development of donor reports, board materials, and high-stakes presentations
  • Identify gaps in our communications infrastructure and build processes to close them
  • Track and report on communications KPIs, turning data into decisions

What we’re looking for
You are a confident, senior communications professional who can think strategically and still produce excellent work at the sentence level. You don't need direction on the fundamentals. You likely have:

  • 5 to 10 years of experience in communications, public affairs, or a closely related field.
  • A strong track record of developing and executing communications strategies, not just supporting them.
  • Experience in politics or an advocacy organization.
  • Exceptional writing and editing skills, with the ability to adapt voice and format for different audiences and channels.
  • Established experience in media relations, including proactive pitching and spokesperson preparation.
  • The ability to make complex policy and technology topics accessible.
  • Sound judgment about when to move fast and when to slow down.

You'll really impress us if

  • You can work in French
  • You know the Canadian political and media landscape from the inside

Location, travel, and hours
This is a remote role, based anywhere in Canada, and applicants must have legal authorization to work in Canada. Team members are expected to travel to events, conferences, and meetings to represent the organization as needed.

We typically work standard hours in our local time zones (9am-5pm), with core collaboration time between 11am-4pm ET.
